Unique album from The Danish Vestindies 1900s-1920s
Album containing more than 190 vintage photographs from The Danish West Indies and The U.S. Virgin Islands c. 1900's-1920's. The collection includes photographs from St. Croix and St. Thomas on Transfer Day 1917, the mourning ceremony af the death of King Frederik VIII in 1912, a local masquerade, May Day ball as well as street views from several towns on the islands incl. Christiansted, Frederiksted and more as well as views of the islands' country side from Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Eagle, Mt. Victory and from several estates, incl. “North Side”, “Fredensborg”, “La Grange”, “Kingshill”, “Jolly Hill”, “Bettys Hope” and also from the ruins of Bülowsminde. The collection also includes photographs of locals and workers from the sugar factory “Bethlehem”, a public library and from the baracks of the workers.
All vintage gelatin silver prints, professionally glued in a contemporary album and accompanied by handwritten captions in white. Various sizes, Several in a panoramic size. Smallest xx x xx cm, largest xx x xx cm.
Provenance: Descendants of an officer in the Danish artillery serving in The Danish West Indies in this period.
Most photographs in general good original condition with minor traces of silvering around edges to some. Minor handling marks to the album. For further details, please contact the deparment.
