A Baroque needle-punched silver beaker, of slightly conical form, profiled top engraved “Hor Levio JANO debetur honor quia Vicit SPONSAM - Gÿbergoe [?] SOPHIÆ debetur amor, quia Vinxit SPONSUM, body engraved with wreath, letters and year ”LJF JHD Anno 1714", bottom set with an Austrian 1-thaler from 1724 with a portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II. Maker's mark BG, 18th century. Presumably German-speaking cultural area. Weight 226 g. H. 10 cm.

The Latin text can can with reservations be translated as: The honor is due to the light Janus because he conquered the bride - Gÿbergoe [?] love is due to Sophia because she conquered the groom.

Condition

Minimal age-related wear, including a few and minimal scratches and marks as well as a single small nick.
