Thyra Boldsen (b. Stavnsholt 1884, d. Monrovia nær Los Angeles, USA 1968)
Two busts. Unsigned. Raw marble. 49×28×20 cm. and 42×28×22 cm. (2)
Thyra Boldsen begins her training as a sculptor with Gunnar Jensen. In 1903 she graduated from the Drawing and Art Industry School for Women and is admitted to the Royal Academy of Arts, where she studies 1903–12, interrupted by a stay in 1905–06 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
She studies the art of earlier times, just as she gains an in-depth knowledge of the different types of marble and the practical work of stonemasonry on her many trips to England, Germany, Spain, North Africa, Turkey, Italy and Greece. Her portrait busts were usually realistic, but otherwise she strives, via a slight idealisation, for the timeless.
Thyra Boldsen is most successful in the USA, which she visits for the first time in 1926. After traveling back and forth between Denmark and the USA for a few years, she settles permanently in California in 1931 and remains there until her death in 1968.
