With her abstract, lyrical and sensual imagery, Else Fischer-Hansen is quite a unique figure in Danish art history. From the 1920s onwards, she developed her own colourful, light and abstract expression on the canvas over many decades, which has left behind a larger life's work of fine compositions. The family actually had other plans for Else Fischer-Hansen than an artistic career, but after a year at Emil Rannow's painting school, she decides to travel to Italy and France, where she receives lessons at the sketch school in Nice. She never managed to become a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, but in 1928 her works were exhibited for the first time at the Artists' Autumn Exhibition.

From the mid-1930s, the abstract compositions become paramount to her style, and she begins to paint so-called “psychological pictures” based on natural experiences, landscapes or musical experiences. The colours also become lighter and brighter. In 1941 she takes part in Helhesten's famous tent exhibition at Bellevue, and through the 1940s she is close to the group of CoBrA artists and the general development of abstract art on Danish soil. In her later works, the visual expression is simplified, it becomes less fragmented, while the colours are often more delicate.

Fischer-Hansen uses many materials in her art, such as glass and weaving, while in her time she also actively participates in organizations such as Kvindelige Kunstners Samfund, Grønningen and Koloristerne. Her art has been exhibited at a large number of exhibitions - such as the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris and Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, and even after her death in 1996 there has been continued interest in her works. This applies, among other things, the exhibition “Cobra - the female artists” at Museum Jorn in 2021 which exhibited female artists who were part of the environment around CoBrA.
