Michael Ancher (b. Bornholm 1849, d. Skagen 1927)

A fisherman with fur-trimmed cap seen in profile. Signed and dated M. A. 96. Oil on canvas. 41×31 cm.

Study for a fisherman in Ancher's iconic painting “Den druknede” (the drowned fisherman). He is one of the local fishermen, the companion of the drowned, whom he carried home. He stands in grief in full figure in the foreground in the finished painting, that one exhibited at Charlottenborg 1896. Michael Ancher found inspiration for this painting after rescuer Lars Kruse's drowning during a heavy snow storm in 1894.

Provenance: The Hirschsprung Collection. Bruun Rasmussen auction 663, 1999 no. 249.
