Alexei Kondratevich Savrasov (b. Moscow 1830, d. s.p. 1897)

Provenance: The present owner's Norwegian grandparents, Herman Waldemar Knoop (1887–1961) and his wife, Ellen Caroline Knoop, née Sontum (1897–1962). Herman Knoop born in Norway, and the grandson of a brother to Ludwig Knoop (1821–1894), who in 1840 went from Bremen to Moscow to establish the first electric cotton company in Russia. Here Ludwig Knoop established his own cotton business in 1857, and soon he had the largest cotton mill in Europe. He was ennobled as Baron of Tsar Alexander II of Russia in 1877. Herman Knoop himself lived in Moscow from about 1909, where he worked in the family business. Herman married Ellen and they lived in Moscow until the Russian revolution in 1917, after which they returned to Norway. In the period 1909–1917 he acquired Russian art and antiques, including this painting.
