“Den hvide kamel” (The White Camel), Cairo, circa 1935.. Unsigned. Oil on board. 60.5×75 cm.

Anton Hansen (1891–1960) is best known for his political and social satirical drawings, which were published in several daiily papers and newspapers, including Social Demokraten and Information. Through his work, he expanded his circle of friends with other creative and socially observant minds such as the writer Johannes V. Jensen. In 1926 the two embarked on a journey to Egypt and Palestine. It was a trip with a lot of impressions, and AH's sketchbook was filled with scenarios from daily life along the banks of the Nile. AH painted “Den hvide kamel” (The White Camel) in approx. 1935 based on sketches from his experiences in Cairo in 1926. An ink drawing with the very same motif was printed in Social Demokraten the very same year. The drawing is today at Arbejdermuseet in Copenhagen.

Literature: Abilgaard, ink drawing with the same motif ill. p. 257. Exhibited: presumably exhibited at the Anton Hansen separate exhibition at Den Frie, 1951, cat. No. 31. Provenance: Captain and later businessman A.P. Botved, who knew Anton Hansen very well as they had the same circle of friends and saw each other privately. Hereafter inherited within the family.
