An oval Danish giltwood and gilt gesso mirror. The 1840s. On the reserve stamped with the crowned mirrored monogram of Prince Christian of Glücksborg (the future King Christian IX of Denmark) and a label with inventory no. “Palaiet Nr. 123”. H. 90 cm. W. 62 cm.
Provenance: King Christian IX (1818–1906) and Queen Louise of Denmark (1817–1898), The Yellow Palace in Copenhagen, and presumably later their summer residence Bernstorff Palace; thereafter their son and daughter-in-law King Frederik VIII (1843–1912) and Queen Lovisa of Denmark (1851–1926), Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg, hereafter their son and daughter-in-law, King Christian X (1870–1947) and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark (1879–1952), Christian VIII's Palace at Amalienborg; then their son and daughter-in-law, Hereditary Prince Knud (1900–1976) and Hereditay Princess Caroline-Mathilde of Denmark (1912–1995), Christian VIII's Palace at Amalienborg; thereafter their son, Ingolf Count of Rosenborg (b. 1940) until today.
The mirror was acquired by Prince Christian (IX) of Glücksborg and Princess Louise of Hesse-Kassel, presumably in connection with their wedding in 1842, when they moved into The Yellow Palace. In 1863, the couple moved as King Christian IX and Queen Louise of Denmark into Christian IX's Palace at Amalienborg. The Royal couple's residence here stood untouched until 1948. Therefore it it must be assumed that the mirror came to Bernstorff Palace from The Yellow Palace.
