Lili Elbe (b. Einar Wegener) (b. Vejle 1882, d. Dresden 1931)
Scene from Versailles. Signed Einar Wegener. Oil on canvas. 65×50 cm.
Since Versailles was built, the Baroque palace - and perhaps especially the surrounding garden - attracts painters from near and far; as the ultimate symbol of elegance, splendour and beauty. The myth of Versailles as a place for the cultivation of freedom, pleasure and art particularly fascinates the Scandinavian artists in Paris in the 1920s, and both Gerda Wegener and Lili Elbe often visit and paint motifs from there.
While Gerda works on portraits and erotic illustrations, Lili focuses on pools, vegetation and sculptures in the sumptuous palace garden. The style is light, bright, refined and kept in a romantically coordinated palette in the always deserted landscapes. Several of the works are subsequently exhibited in Ole Haslund's house and in Paris at the Salon de Indépendents.
