Johann Friedrich Helmsdorf (b. Magdeburg 1783, d. Karlsruhe 1852)
“Der Herzog von Holstein-Glücksburg”. Portrait of Duke Carl of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1813–1878), head of the family 1831–1878. Signed and dated Fr. Helmsdorf ad nat. pinx. Rendsburg 1837. Pencil and watercolor on paper. Visible size 25×21 cm.
Duke Carl of Glücksborg (1813–1878) was the son of Duke Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1785–1831) and his wife, Duchess Louise (1789–1867), née Princess of Hesse-Kassel. He was thus the brother of, among others, King Christian IX of Denmark, Prince Hans of Glücksburg and Duchess Friedrike of Anhalt-Bernburg. Duke Carl was married to King Frederik VI of Denmark's daughter, Princess Wilhelmine. The marriage was childless and the ducal title with Glücksburg Castle and several estates therefore passed to his brother, Duke Friedrich of Glücksburg.
King Frederik VI of Denmark was married to Princess Marie of Hesse-Kassel, who was Duchess Louise of Glücksburg's sister. These sisters were daughters of Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel and his wife, Landgravine Louise of Hesse-Kassel, née Princess of Denmark as daughter of King Frederik V. Duke Carl and Duchess Wilhelmine of Glücksburg were thus first cousins and both grandchildren of the Landgrave couple.
