Martinus Rørbye (b. Drammen 1803, d. Copenhagen 1848)

A woman from Amager near the Old Stock Exchange. 1829. Signed Rörbÿ Copenhagen (...) [?]. Oil on canvas. 26×20 cm.

Literature: “Kunst i Privateje”, vol. II, 1945, ill. and mentioned p. 100. Here, Jørgen B. Hartmann writes (in Danish): “Director Angelo, as the grandson of the painter Rørbye, has an exquisite collection of his works, both oil paintings and watercolours. [...] ”Parti ved Børsen med en Amagerkone“ [A woman from Amager near the Old Stock Exchange] 1829 [...] is, on the other hand, a mature work by the young painter. Two years earlier he had exhibited his well-known genre ”Børstrappen“ [The Old Stock Exchange Stairs]. Light and shadow balance beautifully in the small sketch. The lady takes a nap under the green market umbrella, while the boy looks curiously at the tempting fruits. The woman's varicoloured scarf, the red headpiece and the lively colours of the goods make the inconspicuous painting festive and cast a shine over a peculiar situation from the Copenhagen of that time.”

Provenance: The artist's grandson director and Master of Engineering Aage Angelo (1945).
