Jonas Collin was a lawyer and Privy Councillor. He played a significant role in the art and cultural life of his time and was the patron of the poet Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875). Collin was an active part of the Danish Art Association's board (Kunstforeningen) in the early years and was chairman for several years. From 1821–1829 and again 1843–1849, he was co-director of The Royal Danish Theatre. Collin was the driving force behind the realisation of Thorvaldsen's Museum and chairman of the board for several years.
