Carlo Levi was a physician by education but from 1923 he started painting. He was connected to the Casorati-school and the early “Novecento” movement. Around 1930, after having painted in a neo-impresionist style, he reached the expressionist style that characterize this painting. Besides his career as a painter, Carlo Levi is especially known as a writer and political activist - in the 1930's in antifascist movements, from 1963 as a member of the Italian Senate.
