Lynn Chadwick (b. London 1914, d. Lypiatt Park 2003)

“Conjunction XVII”. Signed Chadwick 1971, 626, 6/6. Bronze. H. 75 cm. W. 36 cm. D. 23 cm.

Literature: Dennis Farr & Eva Chadwick: “Lynn Chadwick Sculptor. With a Complete Illustrated Catalogue 1947–1988”, New York, 1990, no. 626, ill. Provenance: Private collection, San Francisco, California.

During the 1960s, Lynn Chadwick began working with his simple and faceted figures that were originally inspired by the visual culture of the Easter Island. The artist subsequently developed his very own characteristic expression, which the offered sculpture “Conjunction XVII” is a fine, and size-wise more unusual, example of. Here the man and woman are united and reduced to a kind of essence of abstract geometric shapes. Despite the weight of the matte black bronze, the sculpture appears light, resting on four thin legs. Lynn Chadwick's sculptures are often archetypes that portray the relationship between individuals, their movement, interaction, and sexuality.
