The Danish theologian and author Carl Henrik Scharling embarked on a three-year educational journey in 1860, taking him from England via Italy to Egypt. Initiated in Strasbourg and concluded on the Nile, he published, under the pseudonym Nicolai, at the age of 18, “Ved Nytaarstid i Nøddebo Præstegaard” - a novel where he debated contemporary societal issues. In the novel, the young Nicolai representes the young eroticist and aesthete “Corpus Juris” - a modern social reformer - while the theologian “Gamle” embodies the traditional parsonage culture. Despite the pseudonym, Scharling himself belonged to the old school, expressing lifelong resistance to the cultural currents of that time.
