Svend Wiig Hansen (b. Møgeltønder 1922, d. Helsingør 1997)
Torso. 4/6, standing female. Foundry stamp Jensen Cire Perdue. Bronze. H. 90 cm. Mounted on a base of granite (H. 70 cm.)
Provenance: Original from Veksølund, Poul & Jørgen Hansen's collection. Provenance: Danish private collection.
The “Torso” form is in many ways the main entry point to the sculptural art of Svend Wiig Hansen, a Maillol-inspired combination of his previous works: " ”I will show them all”, explains Wiig. And what he wanted to show with the torso was, of course, as you can see, that he could complete a large classical figure, albeit one without a head and limbs.” (Jens Erik Sørensen (ed): “Klassik · Kaos” (Classical · Chaos), ARoS Publishing, 1989)
The sculpture has been made in several versions and materials; a version in fired clay from 1951 is in the collection at ARoS, while a bronze cast from 1961 is owned by the National Gallery of Denmark. We also know of an edition that Svend Wiig Hansen made and gave to his friend Børge Mogensen.
The sculpture here is cast number 4 out of 6 possible, numbers 5 and 6 have not been cast.
