Anna Ancher (b. Skagen 1859, d. s.p. 1935)

Communion in Skagen Church. Study. Unsigned. Oil on cardboard. 24×32 cm.

Provenance: The artist's daughter Helga Ancher, her estate auction Bruun Rasmussen 193, 1966 no. 164. Stamp from here on the reverse.

The present painting is a study for “Altergang i Skagen kirke” (Communion in Skagen Church), which Anna Ancher painted two versions of in 1899. Both are today at The Art Museums of Skagen. One, which was exhibited at Charlottenborg 1930 no. 23. (Inv. No. 1073); the other at Charlottenborg 1900 as no. 5, and that one was purchased at Bruun Rasmussen auction 915, 2023 no. 135 for a hammer price of DKK 550,000.

In the present painting, the priest is seen during communion on the left side, while in the two finished paintings Anna Ancher has omitted this and instead focused on the churchgoers.
