Wilhelm Marstrand (b. Copenhagen 1810, d. s.p. 1873)

Italian farmers on their way to town. Sketch. 1869. Unsigned. Oil on paper laid on canvas. 43×57 cm.

A watercolour with the same motif dated 1869 at the National Gallery of Denmark (KKSgb6757). In 1869 Marstrand travelled in the company of the painter P. C. Skovgaard and the lithographer Kittendorf to Italy for the last time.

Exhibited: Kunstforeningen, “Marstrand Udstilling”, 1898 no. 585 (listed under “Tillæg til Fortegnelsen over Malerierne” (supplement to the catalogue of the paintings).

Provenance: Amtsforvalter (district revenue officer) Conrad Weidemann, Aalborg (1898). Danish private collection, purchased Bruun Rasmussen auction 718, 2003 no. 1534, reproduced p. 60.
