“Heste, som rides til Svømning”. Horses are taken for a swim. 1873. Signed with monogram. Oil on canvas. 64×106 cm.

Vibeke Skov, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Theodor Philipsen no. 105.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1873 nr. 362. (Competition piece for the Neuhausen Award). Kunstforeningen, “Th. Philipsen Udstilling”, 1911 no. 53.

Provenance: Mrs. M. Wanscher, née Hage (1911). The estate auction of the late Gerda Feldthausen, Winkel & Magnussen 351, 1949 no. 227, reproduced p. 4. A known study for the present painting (no. 103 in the Catalogue Raisonné) states that the motif derives from the part of the country at Scheelenborg. Philipsen spent the summer and autumn of 1872 at Hindsholm and the manor Scheelenborg. He did many sketches and studies of the landscape in order to qualify for the Neuhausen Award. Philipsen had tried to win the award twice before and he finally succeeded with the present work. The owner of Scheelenborg, Baron Christian Juel-Brockdorff, became Philipsen's friend and his Patron, which proved to be of great importance to Philipsen.
