Arne Jacobsen (b. Copenhagen 1902, d. s.p. 1971)

A pair of unique easy chairs on round mahogany legs. Sides and back upholstered with original, patinated natural leather. Back with buttons. Seat upholstered with sand-coloured canvas. Made and designed 1935. (2)

Provenance: Mr. L.P. Jørgensen, CFO at Novo 1934–1972 who was allowed to take the chairs home in relation to a rebuild at Novo in the 1950s, then by descent. Made for the office of the founders of Novo Therapeutic Laboratory, the brothers Thorvald & Harald Petersen circa 1935. The chairs were originally part of a sofa seating group which also included a third chair and a sofa. The sofa today remains in the possession of the family after the founders of Novo. The chairs are a so far unknown model, which however falls naturally into the design language which Arne Jacobsen explored in his chairs at this early stage in his career. It is in many ways a potent and voluminous variation of the widely publicized Charlottenborg-chair. The chair was made of bamboo and cane which Arne Jacobsen designed 1936 for maker E.V.A. Nissen, and shown at the spring exhibition at Charlottenborg in 1937. In fact these chairs must be regarded as the predecessor. The chairs also show a clear relation to a contemporary easy chair from 1935, designed for the Sct. Jørgens branch of Landmandsbanken.
