Original ambrotype of Niagara Falls by Platt D. Babbitt, c. 1860. 8,8×11,5 cm. Ambrotype housed in original, contemporary box.
The American photographer Platt D. Babbitt was active from the 1850's to the 1870's. He is famous for his photographs of the Niagara Falls where he held on to an attractive, decorative position, “Prospect Point”, on the shore to capture the falls and the people visiting the sight. He became notorius for intervening and interupting other photographer's photo sessions in this area, if they tried to occupy “his” space.
