Contemporary Art, Graphic Works and Editions Wanted for This Autumn’s Auctions

Art grapples with life’s big questions. It broadens our horizons and makes us wiser about the world around us. This is especially true of modern and contemporary art, which, with works created by both well-established names and upcoming stars from the Danish and international art scene, all but guarantees to attract a high level of attention and higher hammer prices. We’re currently on the lookout for a strong selection of contemporary art, modern graphic works and editions for this autumn’s upcoming auctions.

Contemporary Art

Contemporary art is the art that mirrors, comments and reflects on the world around us in the here and now. And yet it often reveals a fascination with older art and old techniques. The contemporary art market has traditionally been the realm of the galleries. They have the latest and the newest. But we’re see a growing interest in both buying and selling contemporary art at auction. And we’d like to be a part of that. We want to show that there are good finds to be made and good contemporary art to be purchased at auction. The contemporary art market is largest in metropolises such as New York, London and Paris. And here, interest is now being shown in what Denmark has to offer. Increasing interest means increasing prices. We focus on both established artists and new, up-and-coming artists.

“Contemporary art is exciting. It captivates you with its substance, bold colour palette and the deeper meaning behind the work concerned. An artist such as Klara Lilja works with earthenware and stoneware. Playing with shapes and colours and developing special glazes are particularly important to her. Emily Gernild works, for example, with traditional still life painting, mixing plants and fruit with everyday objects, Rasmus Eckhardt, on the other hand, works with pastel chalk on MDF boards and has an aesthetic expression inspired by the fashion and design industries. Darker tones are to be found in the works of artists such as Cathrine Raben Davidsen and Ulrik Møller. I love that contemporary art is so wide-ranging in its expression and materials."

Graphic Works and Editions

Graphic art is a collective term for a large number of specific and very different techniques – from woodcuts and etching to lithography and serigraphy. The best graphic art is strongly represented on the Danish art scene – and on the walls of private homes. Graphic art is the result of a highly specialised artistic process, where the artist creates an original work that is inherently diverse, but where the edition is limited to a set number of prints, approved by the artist with his or her original signature.

We have a rich and vibrant tradition for graphic workshops, whose high professionalism and expertise are in demand both at home and abroad. J. Chr. Sørensen Litografiske Værksted and Permild & Rosengreen in particular have been associated with high-quality graphic art since the late 1940s. And since the early 1960s, Danish graphics have had a prominent bastion and ambassador in the metropolis of Paris in the form of Atelier Clot, Bramsen & Georges (today Clot, Bramsen & Brunholt). Workshops such as UM Grafik, Hostrup-Pedersen & Johansen and Steinprent (Tórshavn, Faroe Islands) have been – and continue to be – important quality stamps to know and navigate by. This means that several international artists come here to create their original graphic art in Denmark – often in collaboration with an expert ”master printer” – as seen at renowned workshops such as Edition Copenhagen and Borch Editions.
