A selection of antiques from the auction. The photograph was taken at one of Copenhagen's well-preserved gems – the Bernstoff Palace at Bredgade 42. This palace was built in 1752-1756 by the architects J.G. Rosenberg and Nicolai Eigtved on the request of the nobleman Johann Hartwig Ernst Count von Bernstorff. The palace, together with Dehn's Palace on the opposite corner, forms a link between the Marble Church and Amalienborg’s octagonal courtyard. The interior is in the finest French Rococo style and the well-preserved main staircase is made of rare Norwegian Gjellebæk marble. The historical building is today owned by the real estate and service company Jeudan.

Auction: Selected

Would you like to decorate your home with furniture from a Danish castle? Summer is upon us, and we can now present a new edition of our popular theme auction "Selected". You can already place your bids now – and the hammer will begin to fall on Monday 27 June at 6 pm on bruun-rasmussen.dk.

The lots at this summer's auction include a large number of Danish and European furniture, mirrors, carpets and other furnishings made with high-quality craftsmanship. They have all been carefully selected by the specialists in our department of European furniture and rugs. In total, we can present 137 lots this time, and some of the highlights include furniture from Danish castles.

Please Take Your Seats

At the auction, we have a large selection of chairs that span many styles, historical periods and a large geographical area of origin. There will be something to bid on, regardless of whether you are into Italian Rococo chairs or Gustavian chairs from Sweden. 12 of the chairs have a royal provenance, as they have been owned by Princess Thyra of Denmark and included in the decor at Denmark's most famous castle – Amalienborg in Copenhagen – more specifically in Frederik VIII's Palace, which today houses the Crown Prince and Princess. The chairs are from the late 1800s and were executed in the style of Historicism, most likely by chairmaker and purveyor to the court C.B. Hansen. The furniture is stamped with the Danish Royal House's inventory number and Frederik VIII's crowned monogram.

The Presence of History at Bernstorff Palace

One of the auction's furniture sets also has a past at a prominent Danish palace. The set consists of eight chairs and a sofa in the Rococo style from the end of the 19th century. The furniture originates from Bernstorff Palace north of Copenhagen, which was built by the French architect Nicolas-Henri Jardin in the years 1759-65 for the Minister of Foreign Affairs Johan Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff. The palace remained in the ownership of the Bernstorff family until the beginning of the 19th century and was later bought by Christian VIII. It was here at this palace that the Danish royal family gathered most of Europe's royal and princely houses during the summer, so the furniture up for auction has certainly been part of a setting that brimmed with history.

Antiques from an Artistic Countess

A handful of furniture has also been owned by the painter and Countess Berta Grete Moltke-Huitfeldt, who was a student of one of Denmark’s great modernist painters, Mogens Andersen. She was born on the Glorup Estate on Funen, and from her private collection comes, among other items, a very fine southern German Rococo giltwood prayer stool from approx. 1760 and a Danish Baroque ironbound oak wood document shrine from the 18th century.
