Record-breaking Hammer Prices at Coin Auction

A historic collection of Transylvanian coins broke all the records at our latest Live Auction – and now is your chance to consign coins to our next auction at Bredgade. You can also bid on rare coins of a high quality at our Online Auction until 25 December.

Coins Sold for Several Million Kroner

Dizzying hammer prices were fetched at our latest Live Coin Auction at Bredgade. Among the auction highlights was a rare collection of Transylvanian coins minted for the Rákóczi dynasty – a dominant noble family in the Kingdom of Hungary from the 13th to the 18th century. Valued at just over DKK 5.4 million, the collection fetched a total hammer price of more than DKK 18.1 million – exceeding the total estimate by 334 %!

10 Ducats 1652, Frauenbach (Nagybánya, Baia Mare), Resch 54, F 394, Montenuovo 893. Estimate: DKK 400,000. Hammer price: DKK 2.35 million.

The absolute high jumper was a 10 ducat from 1649, which, valued at DKK 350,000, landed at the stunning hammer price of DKK 2.45 million. Three other coins from the collection also fetched impressive hammer prices of DKK 2.35 million, DKK 2.1 million and DKK 2.05 million. The previous record for the most expensive coin ever sold in the history of the auction house was thus broken by all four coins.

Live Coin Auction at Bredgade

If you have treasures hidden away, you’re welcome to have them valued now at one of our departments or online via our website. The deadline for consignment to the Live Auction is 1 March.

Harry Lisby’s Collection of Civil War Coins

And now to the current Online Auction at bruun-rasmussen.dk. The coins from the period of the Danish Middle Ages between the death of Valdemar Sejr and Margrethe I’s inauguration as “sovereign lady and lord and guardian of the entire kingdom of Denmark” are popularly known as “civil war coins”. The small pennies are generally recognised as being somewhat primitive in character, as they are struck with simple stamps, rarely with lettering, and swiftly minted. They are, however, the embodiment of medieval when it comes to their motifs. Even so, civil war coins are not widely collected, as it takes a real connoisseur to make head or tail of the motifs.

This is why it is such a delight for us to be able to offer Harry Lisby’s collection, which is distinguished by its unusually good condition, at our upcoming Online Auction. In his professional life, Harry Lisby was a well-respected stamp dealer, who did not get into numismatics until after his retirement. He not only brought with him his sense of quality from the world of philately, but also his keen eye for varieties, hence the number of rarely seen types up for auction. The Online Auction can be found on our website and ends at 3 pm on 25 November.
