Masterly Works of Art on Paper

From woodcuts and copperplate engravings to watercolours and drawings – for centuries, paper has been an important tool in the creation of art. In July, we’ll be focusing on graphic works and drawings and offering a string of masterly works of art on paper at a themed Online Auction. Among others, you can bid on works by C.W. Eckersberg, H.G.F. Holm, P. Ilsted, J. Th. Lundbye, P.C. Skovgaard, L. Frølich, L.C. Lund, W. Marstrand, Th. Bülau, E. Peterssen and P.S. Krøyer.

Whether it’s a quick sketch or a carefully crafted preliminary study for a larger work, drawings often provide us with a more intimate insight into the artist’s work. This same intimacy also applies to the graphic artworks, where skilled craftsmen have carefully engraved, cut or etched directly onto copper plates or wood. These techniques made it possible to disseminate the art and make it more accessible to people who would otherwise not be able to enjoy it.

"Drawings are often the medium in which the artist can sketch out his or her ideas as a way of exploring different methods and forms. Whatever the case, the artist’s personality and temperament often become apparent through his or her choice of materials and pen strokes.”

“Poor Holm” and Golden Age Copenhagen

In Denmark, the period from 1801–1864 was characterised by a flourishing art scene. Music, literature and not least painting thrived despite a serious economic and territorial downturn. The artist H.G.F. Holm (1803–1861) – also known as “Poor Holm” – succeeded under particularly difficult circumstances in becoming known for his depictions of life and the streets in the capital. Despite being a highly industrious and productive painter, he suffered from a constant lack of money. For his small prospects, he received just 1 rdl. – money that was desperately needed in a poor family with four children. Holm’s motifs depict the capital’s marketplaces, streets, squares and buildings. He made pencil sketches on site, which he then copied at home, often making several copies, and then coloured. He later went on to produce a series of outline engravings, which were then coloured with watercolour. Holm’s extensive production provides a unique picture of the breathtaking capital during the Golden Age.  In contrast to the self-taught H.G.F Holm, who created his work in Golden Age Copenhagen and the idyllic surroundings of the city, other artists of his day headed for warmer climes.

H.G.F. Holm: "The ruin of Frederik's Church, Copenhagen". Signed Holm. Drawing ink and watercolour on paper mounted on paper. Sheet size 21 x 32.5 cm. Period frame. Estimate: DKK 6,000-8,000.
H. G. F. Holm: "The demolition of Vesterport". Signed and dated Holm 1859. Drawing ink and wash on paper. 21 x 31 cm. Estimate: DKK 8,000-12,000.
H. G. F. Holm: "View of Copenhagen rooftops with Rundetårn in the distance". C. 1840. Unsigned. Drawing ink and watercolour on paper. Estimate: DKK 6,000-8,000.
H.G.F. Holm: "Behind the Churchyard wall at Helliggejst". C. 1840. Unsigned. Drawing ink and watercolour on paper laid on paper. Sheet size 17.5 x 23.5 cm. Estimate: DKK 3,000-4,000 kr.

Holm painted his watercolours with immense accuracy. In his works, we find a wealth of detail verging on the scientific, and as we know it from other of the most significant artists of the time, such as Eckersberg. Holm quickly became a master of the difficult technique of watercolour painting. The scenes of Copenhagen street life are his artistic highlights and have always attracted collectors.”

Artist Portraits from the Scandinavian Association/Circolo Scandinavo in Rome

In the first half of the 19th century, Rome was the absolute centre of European art. On the initiative of Bertel Thorvaldsen, “De Danskes Bogsamling i Rom” (the Danish Book Collection in Rome) was founded in 1833. For decades, this “library” and the local Caffé Greco served as a social and cultural “embassy” for the many visiting Danish artists who spent time in the city. It was later named “Circolo Scandinavo”, and the artists drew and exchanged self-portraits and portraits of each other during their time here. This formed the basis of Circolo Scandinavo’s unique collection of artist portraits, the remainder of which we now have the pleasure of being able to offer at our Online themed Auction entitled Art on Paper.

Theodor Bülau: Portrait of August Krafft (1798-1829). With dedication. Pencil on paper. 12 x 10.5 cm. Estimate: DKK 30,000-40,000.
Lorenz Frølich: Portrait of Ernst Meyer (1797-1861). Sign. monogram Olevano 47. Pencil on paper. 20 x 15,5. Estimate: DKK 30.000-40.000 kr.
Eilif Peterssen: Portrait of P. S. Krøyer (1851-1909). Signed and dated Eilif P. 81. Red chalk on paper. 24 x 15.5 cm. Estimate: DKK 30,000-40,000.
P. S. Krøyer: Portrait of Eilif Peterssen (1852-1928). Signed and dated P. S. Krøyer, Rome 22 April 81. Pencil on paper. 24 x 16 cm. Estimate: DKK 30,000-40,000.

“These drawings testify to close friendships and a rare sense of unity across national borders and nationalities, as demonstrated by the German artist Theodor Bülaus’s sensitive portrait of the painter August Kraft, as well as in the portraits the Danish painter P.S. Krøyer and the Norwegian painter Eilif Peterssen drew of each other in Rome in 1881. Circolo Scandinavo’s remarkable collection of friendship portraits thus houses powerful personal statements about friendship and feelings, in addition to being the historical imprint of a number of highly sought-after artists' works in pen and ink on paper.”

Sought-After Artists on Paper

The artists included Lorenz Frølich, who made a name for himself as an illustrator, drawer and graphic artist outside the country; F. C. Lund, who participated in the decoration of Thorvaldsens Museum and who, from 1854–60, painted a large number of hugely popular watercolours of Danish folk costumes; Vilhelm Bissen, who, influenced by French naturalism, inspired an entire generation of young sculptors;  Wilhelm Marstrand, who, as a student of Eckersberg, painted portraits of his friends and who lost himself in the Italian way of life, with folk festivals as a recurring theme of his large Italian compositions; and not least Krøyer, who was gifted with a rare artistic talent and had the ability to reproduce any subject quickly and reliably, chosen or posed, in pencil, oil or pastel, and who sought the company of other artists in France, Italy and finally Skagen, where he famously settled in 1882.

Bid on artist portraits, fine prospects and other art on paper. The hammer falls on 29 July.
