Know Your Artist: Hans Dahl

The Norwegian artist Hans Dahl (1849–1937) dedicated his entire body of work to the grand Norwegian landscape, particularly the scenic beauty of Western Norway. On an Online Auction on February 24, you have the chance to bid on a small collection of his works.

Sunlit fjords and mountains populated by happy people in traditional regional costumes. Hans Dahl’s works clearly reflect a national romantic heritage. Both the play of light and a single flower in the meadow are captured in his loose brushstrokes, reminiscent of Impressionism.

In the upcoming Online Auction, we offer seven works by the artist, including sweet portraits of children and classic Dahl motifs such as log cabins and fjords bathed in sunlight.

Bidding is already open – and don’t forget, you can also experience the works at our preview in Lyngby until the auction. See the address and opening hours here.

HANS DAHL

National romanticism with international apppeal

Dahl studied at the art academy in Karlsruhe, where he was particularly inspired by Hans Gude (1825–1903), one of Norway’s most prominent national romantic artists.

For many years, Dahl lived in Berlin, while spending his summers in Western Norway. He enjoyed his greatest popularity in Germany during his lifetime, but today, his works are also highly sought after at Scandinavian auctions.
