There is a large selection of clocks in many different price classes, among the more spectacular of which may be mentioned: a Cartier “Pasha” (Lot 1910), a Patek Philippe “Sport” (Lot 1892), a fine Louis XV gilt bronze cartel clock from Stockholm (Lot 2137), a Louis XVI wall clock in a gilt wood case by master clockmaker Gustav Unden (Lot 2133), a lantern clock with musical chimes played on 8 silver bells (Lot 2136), two rare turret clocks (Lots 2128 and 2129), a large collection of grandfather clocks both from Denmark and England.

On this occasion the Danish “Bornholmers” (grandfather clocks) include an Otto Arboe clock with quarter chimes in an outstanding case with rococo carving and the original top (Lot 2088), and from South Jutland the grandfather clock from Matz Wied, Satrup in an elm wood case made by Lorenz Nielsen is definitely worth taking a look at (Lot 2087).

Jewellery of international quality

Worthy of mention here are three solitaire rings adorned with magnificent diamonds, one of 8.1 cts. (Lot 1826), one 5.6 cts. (Lot 1808) and one of 3 cts. (Lot 1780), and there are handsome wristwatches from Cartier (Lot 1910) and Patek Philippe (Lot 1892).

A piece of European cultural history

From seventeenth century Vienna a small chest with old hand-written documents and a charming rococo double portrait of a young woman and a little girl has turned up hidden away among the effects in a Danish manor. In 1752, Johann Volpert Sames was appointed Court Counsellor to Emperor Franz I, who ratified the appointment in a beautiful velvet-bound document signed by the emperor in person and bearing his imposing red wax seal.

The document is presumed to have accompanied Sames’ son, Karl Wilhelm von Sames (1724–1789), to Denmark, where he made a long career with the Danish army. (Lot 1359) estimate EUR 3,350. The document is being sold together with a gold signet ring and yet another hand-written document from the Bishop of Fulda, dated 1774, which mentions both Johann Volpert Sames and Karl Wilhelm von Sames.

The lady in the above-mentioned double portrait might possible be Karl Wilhelm von Sames’ French-born wife Marie Jeanne Constance de Saint-Germain (1737–1791), who around 1753 married the German-born officer, who later became a Danish lieutenant-general and commander of the Queen’s Life Guard Regiment. The painting, which adorns the cover of the catalogue, is valued at EUR 8,050–10,500. (Lot 103).

Rare rustic articles

Auction 98 offers many unusual and rare rustic articles which any discriminating collector of rustic arts and crafts would be proud to acquire. Among the items on offer there is, for example, a beautifully painted and carved Alsinger baroque cupboard from the parish of Tandslet (Lot 2242). The cupboard is ornately carved with rocaille and bunches of roses as well as classicist capitals. A baroque cupboard of the same type stands in Sønderborg Museum. The baroque cupboard is estimated at EUR 8,050–10,500.

And last but not least, an extremely rare, richly painted and marbled south Jutland baroque wardrobe will be on offer. With its unusually handsome and elaborately carved ornamentation in the form of masks, birds, fruit and figure scenes “Justitia, Temperis, Spes, Fides” and the initials AMB Anno 1740 it must be considered to be a showpiece of rustic arts and crafts. (Lot 2226).

The Brewery Society’s conference room suite

An unusually rare suite of furniture will be under the hammer at Bruun Rasmussen’s forthcoming auction in Vejle.

The Brewery Society’s conference room suite was probably commissioned by brewer and patron of the arts Carl Jacobsen, who at that time was chairman of the society. This unique and imposing suite is decorated with Skønvirke (Danish Art Nouveau) ornamentation and bears the initials BF, which is beautifully inlaid into the head pieces of the chairs.

The quality of the craftsmanship would appear to indicate a prominent architect and craftsman-designer of the period from the circle around Thorvald Bindesbøll, Johan Rohde and Carl Brummer. The Skønvirke suite (Lot 2206) is estimated at EUR 40,000.
