Reigning Queens

In 1985, world-renowned artist Andy Warhol created a series entitled “Reigning Queens”, which with its unorthodox approach to royal portraiture today marks one of his most influential series. Queen Elisabeth II of the United Kingdom, Beatrix of the Netherlands, Ntombi Twaia of Swaziland and finally our own reigning monarch, Margrethe II, were all portrayed in vivid hues and with an irreverence that was both surprising and novel.

Unpretentious and elevated

With their vivid palette the four prints in the series each represent subtle variations of the common theme. However, the “provocative” result refrains from de-masking the serenity of royalty. On the contrary, Warhol succeeds in nurturing an almost iconographic classicism. Offering great similarity with the portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis, the “Reining Queen” series was not commissioned by royalty, rather they were created on the initiative of the artist himself.

To emphasise the sense of royal grandeur, a limited edition of the world-famous serigraphs were treated with diamond dust. The works currently auctioned from this series each represent a striking and distinctive representation of Queen Margrethe II well suited to both a private home or a corporate lobby.

The works will be sold online but are exhibited at Bredgade – a few minutes walk from the Royal Palace.
