A Cover from a World-famous Pilot and Fine Stamp Collections

At this autumn’s stamp auction on 30 November, we present a varied and quality conscious selection. The majority comes from Denmark and the Nordic countries, but many larger collections from Europe and the rest of the world have also made their way to the auction.

The highlights are many at this stamp auction and they include a special cover carried by the world-famous pilot Charles Lindbergh, two fine Danish collections from renowned collectors and a number of other stamps of a high quality from all over the world.

Please note: the auction has been moved a day and will therefore take place on Wednesday 30 November at 9 pm at our website bruun-rasmussen.dk, and you can already place your bids now. Before the auction you can also visit our preview at Paul Bergsøes Vej 20B in Glostrup. View the opening hours of the preview here

Cover Transported by World-famous Pilot

The American pilot Charles Lindbergh achieved worldwide fame when he as the first person ever crossed the Atlantic in a non-stop solo flight in 1927. He was subsequently hired by the large American airline companies led by Pan Am (Pan American World Airways), when they wanted to establish a transatlantic plane route over the arctic regions and needed a pilot for their test flights.

One of Lindbergh’s assignments was to find a safe passage for passenger planes between the United States and Europa – and he succeeded in the endeavor! In 1933, he flew on behalf of Pan Am from New York to Greenland, from Greenland to Iceland and from Iceland to the Faroese islands, before he made it to the European continent. From the stopover on Iceland, the plane carried a limited number of covers, and it is one of these covers, one can now bid on.

“Only about five covers are known to exist from this flight, so the cover, which we are selling at auction is extremely rare. Among other things, the offered cover has been given a special stamp that signifies this shipment. It was sent via Iceland and Copenhagen to Sorø.”

Christian Grundtvig, Head of the Department for Stamps at Bruun Rasmussen.

Danish Collections and International Stamps

Especially two of the auction’s impressive Danish collections are worth keeping an eye on. One is the final part of the well-known Flemming Borch Jensen's collection of Danish “squares”, which we have sold with great success at our auctions in recent years. The other Danish collector in question is Thomas Hilkjær and his very fine collection of Chr. X – an area that has always been highly sought after by collectors. Here you can find, among other lots, the variant 70 øre with “thick ciphers” as well as a letter with 21 ex. of 10 kr. stamps.

From the Faroe Islands, we can present expertly analyzed objects from Steen Jack Petersen's collection and several newly discovered objects, including a parcel card franked with official stamps. In the section with the Danish West Indies, we continue the partition of Klaus Vollmond's fine collection, and among the international objects there are also strong representatives from Great Britain including the Commonwealth, Portugal including historical colonies, and Germany including historical colonies.

Chr. X, 70 øre, brown/green, 1918. Estimate: DKK 30,000.
3 cents, carmine, WHITE GUM, 1856. Estimate: DKK 20,000.
2 RBS Thiele. Plate I, no. 67. Type 3, 1852. Estimate: DKK 15,000.
