Classical Danish Stoneware

Eva Stæhr-Nielsen, Axel Salto, Gertrud Vasegaard, Arne Bang, and Saxbo. Nothing is more sought-after in interior design right now than works from the golden age of Danish stoneware, circa 1920–1980. During this period, ceramicists combined craftsmanship and artistic quality, uniting them with the most beautiful glazes.

They created a wide range of unique works that today symbolize the strong Danish design tradition and continue to influence contemporary design. In our current themed auction, we have assembled a large selection of ceramic works from various artists, decades, and workshops.

The Collector Erik Veistrup

One of Denmark’s greatest collectors was undoubtedly the schoolteacher Erik Veistrup. Throughout a long life, he collected art and ceramics with tireless enthusiasm in his search for new works. He bought with his heart, never chasing what was fashionable or merely profitable.

Veistrup was a generous man who donated a large number of works to institutions including Kunsten in Aalborg, CLAY Ceramic Museum, Trapholt, and Museum Jorn. The museums’ interest testifies to the quality of the enormous art collection that filled his private home on Amager. He took particular joy in introducing others to the world of art, and in keeping with his spirit, we now present a wide range of works from his collection at auction.

The Ceramic Art of Jais Nielsen

One of the Danish pioneers in introducing new European artistic movements in the early 20th century was Jais Nielsen. He rebelled against traditional pictorial conventions, allowing ideas from the avant-garde’s Cubism, Expressionism, and Futurism to manifest in his work. Jais Nielsen is best known for his monumental paintings, inspired by his stay in the art capital of Paris from 1911 to 1914 – works that shook the Danish art world of his time. Now, we present another crucial aspect of his practice: a series of later ceramic works featuring religious motifs and exquisite celadon, solfatara, and ox-blood glazes – including “The Kiss of Judas,” “Samson and the Lion,” and “St. Peter.”

Collecting Antique Treasures

At our themed auction on 2 November, you will step into a fascinating world of curiosities, decorative arts, and furniture from the 14th to the 18th centuries – precisely the kind of objects that dedicated antique collectors seek. We have curated the selection as a modern interpretation of the traditional Kunstkammer (cabinet of curiosities), a trend that emerged in the 16th century and served as a precursor to today’s museums. Here, kings gathered precious rarities and displayed them as symbols of their power, wealth, and vision. Highlights from Collecting Antique Treasures include a range of 18th-century antiques – among them glass goblets, an English perfume bottle, a silver lion, a Danish Baroque spoon, and much, much more.

Available to view online from 13 October.
