Heaven and Hell
This Sunday, we dive into one of the more odd nooks of numismatics with a pair of the so-called "Satan Coins" from Knud Langkow's fictitious cult on the island of Anholt. Over the past decades, the project has been a subject of both interest and wonder to people who learn about it. Join us on the journey – if you dare…
Knud Langkow and the Satan Coins
It was Knud Langkow (1931-2004) who founded and over the years kept the fictional "Satanic Cult on Anholt" alive. He staged various happenings, wrote letters and hid satanic coins in churches, museums, etc. Both Langkow and this whole work of art or life’s work have in the last decade received renewed attention through articles, documentary films and books.
Langkow had various types of satanic coins made, which were used by the cult. The coins display fine engraving work, and they are relatively well-minted. Due to their great popularity, forgeries have unfortunately appeared in recent years. They are, however, significantly inferior/simpler, especially in terms of engraving, and they can therefore be detected.
Satan Coins up for Auction
We have sold several of the most common and possibly oldest "Satanic Coins from Anholt" at great hammer prices. They are made of copper and show a devil and the text "CIVITAS DIABOLI” and “13 MAY ANHOLT 1973”.
At our current coin auction, we are offering two very rare satanic coins from Langkow's cult. One is with the High Priestess Alice Mandragora riding a goat. She is the messenger between Heaven and Hell/God and the Devil. The motif on the second coin is about the cult on Anholt – The Island with the Two Faces – since ANNUS HORRIBILIS 1973.
