Scientific Poetry from the Danish Golden Age

One of the rarities at this auction is a well-preserved presentation copy of Hans Christian Ørsted's great epos on nature entitled Luftskibet (The Airship) from 1836. Ørsted is probably remembered first and foremost for his ground-breaking discovery of electromagnetism in 1820, but he was also a lively participant in the cultural life and literary debates of the Danish Golden Age, and his joy of poetry was greatly strengthened through a long-lasting friendship with people such as Adam Oehlenschläger. Of Ørsted's own poetic attempts, the best-known example is exactly Luftskibet, which was published as a cycle of poems in various verse forms. Ørsted wrote Luftskibet as an attempt at a poetic presentation of science. Among the auction’s modern poetry, a signed and illustrated copy of the Swedish Nobel Prize winner Tomas Tranström's POÉMES, printed in Paris in 1998, deserves to be highlighted. Several first editions of the Finnish-Swedish poet Edith Södergran have also found their way to the auction.

Presentation copy by Hans Christian Ørsted: Luftskibet. Cph 1836. 1st ed. 12mo. Inscribed by the author on flyleaf. Estimate: DKK 3,000-5,000.
Islands landnamabok. Hoc est: liber originum Islandiae [...]. Cph 1774. + Rymbegla. sive rudimentum. Cph 1780. Estimate: DKK 8,000-10,000.

The auction also includes a string of modern, illustrated works with original prints, such as Arnaldo Pomodoro and Luis Borges’ Siete Poemas Sajones. Seven Saxon Poems (1974) originating from the painter and graphic artist Berta Grete Countess Moltke-Huitfeldt's book collection.

At this auction, we also conclude the sale of the large book collection belonging to Flemming Erik Pedersen (1931–2020), honorary member of the Danish Bibliophile Club. Both early book prints from the 16th and 17th centuries as well as various journals with first prints by Hans Christian Andersen will come under the hammer from this collection.
