Albert Bertelsen - A Life with a Canvas and Brush
The popular Danish artist Albert Bertelsen began his career as a sign painter but ended up painting soulful portraits and rocky Nordic landscapes that can touch even the most hardened viewer. Right now, you can find six beautiful works by Bertelsen at our Online Auction on 3 November.
Albert Bertelsen died last year at the age of 98, and he was active at the easel until the end. His works contain both a large portion of melancholy as well as a playful approach to compositions, lines and the relationship between lightness and darkness. Perhaps that is why his works have been so popular over the years.
Right from the start, people have been incredibly positive about what I do, and the interest is persistent. I'm floored by it: I could never have dreamt of all this when I started… The important thing is that people are interested in your work. It's great with financial success, but when it comes down to it, we won’t be bringing anything with us from this place.

Childhood Memories and the Great Outdoors
Based on his childhood memories, Bertelsen traded in his job as a sign painter early on for a life dedicated to art instead. To this day, his paintings of childhood memories are among his most popular motifs. Later on, Bertelsen created works based on his impressions from trips to the Faroe Islands and Norway in the characteristic canvases with fjords and fells: The great outdoors juxtaposed with the small shapes of humans. |
Albert's Portraits and the Beauty of Decay
In addition to the landscapes, Bertelsen has always had a special skill for creating charming portraits. His gallery of characters consists of charismatic figures who cannot fail to instil sympathy in the viewer. Another type of work illustrates his particular sense of the beauty in decay with reproductions of old houses and flaking walls. Motifs that place him in the company of contemporary photorealists such as Bjarke Regn Svendsen and Poul-Anker Bech. |
