Singular Coins in Copenhagen

We’re gearing up for a magnificent Live Auction of coins, medals and banknotes from 2–3 November, when we will be presenting two Danish collections, precious gold coins and a host of other numismatic rarities. Due to COVID-19, guests are required to register for both the preview and the auction.

The Poulsen Family’s Collection

We will be kicking off the auction at 10 am on 2 November with the second part of the Poulsen family’s coin collection, which spans historically from the Viking Age to the present day. The collection was started by the grandfather of the two current owners, Jørgen and Poul Høegh Poulsen, in the early 19th century. All blessed with a keen eye for quality and a nose for a good deal, the three generations of the family have built up an impressive collection brimming with rarities. Our advice to you is this: Channel your inner explorer! View the selection from the Poulsen family’s collection.

Viborg, penning, Hbg. 63, Hbg. auk. 1160. Estimate: DKK 40,000–50,000.

Kurt Guldborg’s Collection

Original iron die for the reverse of the West India Company’s magnificent 5 ducat coin, 1704. Estimate: DKK 50,000.

We also have the pleasure of swinging the hammer over the eagerly awaited second part of Kurt Guldborg’s collection at 10 am on 3 November. The collection features Christian VII’s Half Taler from 1776, rare steel dies for the Danish West India Company’s magnificent 5 ducat, and for the Freetown Christiania’s very first coin, a so-called “Fed” (joint), amusing variants, errors and much more. Even as an incarnated numismatist, you are guaranteed to find variants that you have never come across before. View the selection from Kurt Guldborg’s collection.

Gold Coins from Near and Far

People have always been fascinated by gold – often with fatal consequences. Driven by greed, the legendary King Midas, for example, asked Dionysos to make everything he touched turn to gold, with the result that he could neither eat nor drink. If this does not perturb you, we recommend exploring the second part of the auction at 12.30 on 2 November to satisfy your longing for this beautiful, alluring metal. Heading the collection are two off-strikes in gold of the “Eben Ezerkrone”, which were struck to commemorate the Swedes’ failed attempt to conquer Copenhagen in 1659. They come from Danish entrepreneur and former director of IKEA in Denmark, Ken Muff Lassen. The most expensive item in the auction – which also happens to be of the purest gold – is the magnificent Russian 100 Francs from 1902, which was struck for the personal use of Emperor Nicholas II.

4 ducat 1659, gold “Eben Ezerkrone”. Estimate: DKK 400,000.
