Classical Vintage Watches from a Danish Collection
We can now present a Danish private collection of 84 classical wristwatches that date from the period between the 1940s and the 1970s. The starting point of the collection lies in the design and history, and each of the watches contributes to an exciting horological narrative, which has without a doubt become highly topical again.
At this auction, the materials of the watches mainly consist of gold, gold capped steel and gold plated steel, while many of the lots are supplemented by boxes, straps and C-type buckles. A common trait of all the timepieces is the classical style that the collector has not made any compromises on. Classical wristwatches should be understood as a common term for wristwatches that, based on their smaller size and choice of material, were suitable for finer occasions. They were simple in appearance, but equipped with an elegant design, and should be able to fit under the shirt sleeve without attracting too much attention.
A Change of Style

As the style of wristwatches has changed dramatically since the 1970s towards the larger, multifunctional and battery-powered watches, many Swiss and international watchmakers had to close shop because they could not adapt to modern conditions. Several of these bygone manufacturers can be found at this auction – representative of their time and historically relevant as predecessors in both shape and movement for many of the mechanical watches that are in demand today. |
