The Art Expert's Own Favourites
We have asked our specialist in modern art, Victor Svane Nielsen, to select five of his personal favourites at this week's Online Auction. The hammer will begin to fall on Tuesday 28 April at 8 pm.
At Bruun Rasmussen, we are probably best known for selling art in an expensive price range, which often reaches new heights at our Live Auctions in Copenhagen. However, that's not the whole truth about our auction house, because every week of the year we sell modern art for prices as low as a few thousand Danish kroner at our Online Auctions.
Victor Svane Nielsen has been with Bruun Rasmussen since 2010 and is one of the younger faces of the team of specialists in the department of modern art, which covers works from around 1900 and up until today. He has taken a closer look at this week's selection of modern art, and here are some of his personal favourites.
The Greatest of the Poster Artists“The tradition of poster art really took off in the late 1800s, and in the world's major cities, the poster as a medium received its baptism of fire on advertising columns intended to raise awareness about the many new products available during the changing times. The Frenchman Adolphe Mouron Cassandre is, without doubt, the greatest poster artist in my opinion! The poster here is from 1935 and was produced to promote tourism in “the City of Lights”, Paris. The inspiration is obviously drawn from the contemporary styles of painting, and the perspective pulls the viewer’s attention towards the activities in the background. The soft colours give the work a delicate expression, while the black capitalized letters "PARIS" create a contrast. It's simply cool poster art!” |
An Etched Dog“I have a fondness for the print genre – especially the method through which the artist brings out the motif with etchings. In a way, these works often appear more personal and honest than the polished oil paintings. This week you could get lucky and get your hands on Peter Martensen's "Milton's Dog". The artist is best known for his paintings with repetitive human figures in the process of doing meaningless chores. I am very intrigued by the world he creates in these works, but this etching in some way offers the viewer even more.” |

A Few Flowers for the Wall“Poul Gernes is also one of my favourites! In his own time, he was instrumental in establishing the controversial Ex-school, and his joyful geometric idiom found its way to a myriad of colourful oil paintings and larger set pieces, such as the Palads Cinema in Copenhagen and the hospital in Herlev. It is very rare that we have one of his etchings included in our auctions. If you add a nice frame, the work will look pristine – and with an estimate of only DKK 1,500-2,000, it’s a manageable purchase for most people.” |
Cruising at an Altitude of 4,000 Meters“Also included in this week's programme is Bjørn Pierri Enevoldsen and the painting "4000+ veritikale landskaber” (veritical landscapes), which stems from one of his exhibitions in 2002. The title refers to the painting's vantage point – a mountain peak at 4,000 meters. The artist's trademark is precisely these almost photorealistic depictions of mountain peaks, and for me, there is a great potential found in Enevoldsen's works – I certainly often place a bid on his works myself." |

The Master of Danish ArtFew people have the financial means to consider bidding on one of Per Kirkeby's fantastic oil paintings. However, he mastered several techniques, including prints. I would like to highlight this immensely smart black and white lithograph, which will certainly be a good fit for many modern homes. With an estimate of DKK 3,000-4,000, it is more accessible in price if you, like myself, have an interest in this master of Danish art.” |
