Art on Paper

From copper engravings and etchings to watercolours and drawings – we are currently presenting a wide selection of works of art on paper at a theme auction.

Through the ages, most artists have used drawings as an important part of their creative process. Drawings are often the medium in which the artist can sketch out his or her ideas as a way of exploring different methods and forms. Some ideas develop into preliminary studies, while others remain sketches. Whatever the case, the artist’s personality and temperament often become apparent through his or her choice of materials and pen strokes.

An Intimate Insight Into the Artist’s Work

So, whether it is a quick sketch or a carefully crafted preliminary study for a larger work, drawings can often provide us with a more intimate insight into the artist’s work. This same intimacy also applies to the graphic artworks produced over time, where skilled craftsmen have carefully engraved, cut or etched directly onto copper plates or wood. These techniques made it possible to disseminate the art and make it more accessible to people who would otherwise not be able to enjoy it.

Martinus Rørbye: Scene from the races at Nørre-Fælled in Copenhagen. Pencil and drawing ink on paper. Estimate: DKK 10,000-15,000

A Wealth of Names

The auction features more than 50 works on paper. Among them are some of Denmark’s greatest Golden Age painters, including Christen Købke, C.W. Eckersberg, J.Th. Lundbye and Martinus Rørbye. From the hand of the former, we can highlight an exciting preliminary study for “Parti i Århus Domkirke” (The Transept of Århus Cathedral) from 1830, which hangs at the National Gallery of Denmark. Rørbye’s genre scene from Nørre Fælled provides a fun insight into a bygone era when the park was used for horse racing. If we stay in Copenhagen, there are two charming little prospectuses by painter H.G.F. Holm, also known as “Poor Holm”, which show what Sankt Annæ Plads and Kalkbrænderiet (the lime kilns) looked like in the early 19th century. A nice little portrait sketch of a young woman by L.A. Smith also counts among the many works up for auction.
