A bibliophile gem is offered at this auction in the form of a beautiful copy in a deluxe edition on Japanese paper by the French critic and advocate of the movement, Thèodore Duret. The work Histoire des peintres impressionnistes from 1906 contains six original etchings by names such as Pissarro, Renoir and Cézanne. |

Hans Christian Andersen's "Dear Friend!"
A previously unknown letter from Hans Christian Andersen is also up for auction. The letter was written by Andersen to his friend Harald Scharff, whom Andersen had a close relationship with for a few years. Scharff was Bournonville's favourite male dancer during the 1850s and the male star of Danish ballet in the 1860s, but during a rehearsal for a performance in 1871 he fell and fractured his kneecap – ending his career as a dancer. In the letter from 1865, Andersen asks Scharff to bring a letter to Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson in Oslo. Andersen appears very content at the beautiful Basnæs estate, where the letter was written, but he also recalls the previous year when the Second Schleswig War raged: "[…] When I was here last year, I could not enjoy the beautiful nature at all, “the war over there” consumed my thoughts."

An Illustrated Classic Printed in 1512The oldest book at the auction is the Opere del Divino (The Divine Comedy) – a world-renowned classic written by the Florentine poet Dante Alighieri. The epic poem consists of several hundred verses and tells the story of a journey through the three realms of afterlife: hell, purgatory and paradise. The edition offered here was printed in 1512 and is beautifully illustrated with woodcuts. It is estimated that it took Dante almost 15 years to write the book, and it was only completed shortly before his death in 1321. |
A Broad PaletteThis time around, there is also a broad palette of fiction, history, art books, illustrations, vintage photographs and letters from scientists, royalty and writers. At the auction, an almost complete collection of Carl Barks’ material in Danish (including the Donald Duck publications) will be for sale. The preview takes place at Baltikavej 10, 2150 Nordhavn, Monday 16 March between 10 am – 5 pm and Tuesday 17 March between 10 am – 5 pm. |
