Frederik V's Coins from Oldenburg
We bid you welcome at the second Online Auction of the year on Sunday 19 January from 3 pm. The auction includes 18th century coins with a Danish touch from Oldenburg in the northwestern part of Germany. The city was under Danish rule from the second half of the 17th century to 1773. Coin collectors often overlook the period 1761-1765, where Oldenburg produced Danish coins according to local/German currency with Frederik V's crowned monogram or portrait.

Coins from Oldenburg
The Seven Years’ War 1756-1763 As a Cause for New Coinage
In large parts of Europe, the Seven Years' War led to unstable conditions of coinage and relatively poor coins being made – the Danish Kurantdukat is one of many examples.
The monetary developments were especially chaotic in Germany, and Oldenburg, among other places, was flooded with poor wartime coins. Because of this situation, Oldenburg wanted to hire an assayer and later establish a mint, so that they at least locally could conduct a more stable coin policy.

Coinages of 1761-1765
The wishes of Oldenburg meant that Johan Henrik Madelung, who later became moneyer in Kongsberg, was sent to Oldenburg to carry out both the assayer assignments (such as valuation) and the coinage at a small newly-established mint.
A number of small coins were minted, from the 2 Pfennig to the 2 Mariengroschen, as well as larger coins in the shape of 1/12-2/3 Thalers. However, production was not successful, and the Thaler mintage, for instance, resulted in losses. Due to these losses, and because of political developments, the mint was closed in 1765. You can read more about the coins from this period in the book Kurantmønten 1726-1788 by J. Wilcke.
