Unique Private Collection and Golden Rarities

This autumn’s Live Coin Auction on 4–5 November includes the sale of numismatist Kurt Guldborg’s extensive collection as well as a large selection of rare gold coins. Not to mention all the other treasures! Read on for a peek at what’s on offer.

Coins from a Devoted Numismatist

We begin the Live Coin Auction by paying tribute to the dedicated numismatist, Kurt Guldborg – a significant figure in the Danish coin world – notably as a pioneer of detailed numismatic studies of Frederik IV’s coinage. The first part of his extensive collection is included in this auction.

Piaster 1771, Copenhagen, H 21, S 6, FP 32, Dav. 411A. Kurt Guldborg’s collection. Estimate: DKK 350,000

Kurt Guldborg’s collection is a reflection of true collector spirit. With estimates ranging from DKK 200 to DKK 350,000, nothing has been too large or too small for the quintessential numismatist. Instead, it is his unsurpassed eye for quirky details such as small spelling errors in the coins’ legend that shine through the collection as a whole.

Michael Fornitz, Chief Numismatist at Bruun Rasmussen

After a lifetime as a coin collector and 11 years as a professional coin expert in the auction industry, including here at Bruun Rasmussen, Kurt Guldborg has now decided that the entire collection should be put up for auction and thus reach new collectors and, in his own words, bring new joy.

Roman gold coins and silver coins from the Viking age

The second day of the auction features a large selection of exquisite coins from near and far. Here we present a wealth of golden rarities – from Alexander the Great and Roman emperors, to Danish baroque and rococo ducats. La pièce de résistance is a 5 ducat coin from 1640 with a detailed city view of Munich. If your interest or wallet does not extend to gold, you’ll also find an exceptionally large selection of rare silver coins from the Viking age and early medieval times.

Bavaria, Maximilian I, 1598–1651, Munich, 5 Ducat 1640. Estimate: DKK 150,000
