Vilhelm Hammershøi on Tour
This November, we can present the most expensive piece of art in the history of our auction house. The work is an interior of Strandgade 30 by Vilhelm Hammershøi with an estimate of DKK 20-30 million. Prior to the auction, we will exhibit the painting in London and New York.
Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) still manages to fascinate and challenge us with his enigmatic and poetic universe. He is, without doubt, the Danish artist who has achieved the highest level of international acclaim and is represented in museums worldwide – from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to The National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. One of his most famous and iconic motifs will be for sale at our Live Auction on 26 November: an interior of the artist’s home at Strandgade 30 in Christianshavn, Copenhagen. The motif is kept in shades of grey, while the sunlight falls through the window and onto the floor of a nearly empty room. The painter’s wife Ida stands in the corner immersed in a book. |
