Mail from Christiansø

The small Danish island of Christiansø is part of the archipelago called Ertholmene, which lies approx. 18 km northeast of the larger island of Bornholm. Christiansø and the slightly smaller island of Frederiksø are the only two inhabited islands in the archipelago, and in recent years they have had a combined population of not much more than 100 permanent residents.

In spite of the small population on the islands, Christiansø already had a sub-office established in 1868, which for the first 11 years referred to the post office in Rønne before referring to the post office in Svaneke up until 1981.

On 1 July 1868, the sub-office received its first date mark for cancellations of the incoming mail, and during the period from 1868 to 1917 a total of three different cancellation marks were used – all with the so-called "lapidar type". The rarest of these cancellation marks is No. 2, which was used from 1885-1895. Today, only a few preserved covers are known to exist with this cancellation mark from Christiansø.

At the upcoming stamp auction, we present a fine correspondence card sent to Copenhagen with this cancellation mark from Christiansø dated 1 March 1890.

The rare and almost 130-year-old correspondence card is just one of a total of 837 different lots offered at the upcoming Online Auction. The selection is wide – from small classical stamps and interesting covers to bulky realizations, including numerous boxes filled to the brim.

NB: The dates of the preview have been moved!

Please note that due to Easter, the preview for the stamp auction will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday 16-17 April between 10am and 5pm.
