Trend: Photo-based Art on the Up and Up

The price of photographic art is on the rise. In 2018, we saw more of our Danish customers bidding on and buying photo-based art than ever before, giving our international customers a fight to the finish line. As the trend looks set to continue into 2019, we’re now seeking works for the next Live Auction in Copenhagen.

Trine Søndergaard: Guldnakke, 2012 in original glass and frame. 60x60 cm. Here presented together with other art objects. Estimate: DKK 40,000-50,000.

Cindy Sherman: "Untitled # 312". Signed on the reverse Cindy Sherman 1994, 1/6. Cibachrome. Hammer price: DKK 220,000.

2018 was the year when photography really had its breakthrough on the Danish auction market. The art form saw both impressive prices and great interest at our previews. "It’s a trend we believe in and would like to see continue into 2019," says Valuation and Sales Director Kasper Nielsen. "So we’re currently seeking photographic works for our upcoming Live Auction in Copenhagen, which, in addition to its core areas of modern art and fine art, will also focus on photo art."

"2018 fetched far more high hammer prices on photography than ever before at Bruun Rasmussen," says photography specialist Christine Almlund. "Previously, the interest in photography came largely from our international customers, so it’s nice to see that Danish art collectors have begun to take such an interest in photography that they are also bidding at our photography auctions. This can be felt in the level of prices, which has seen a significant increase over the past year."

At the upcoming Live Auction at the end of February, we’ll be presenting an array of works by acclaimed Danish and international photographers, including Roger Ballen, Olafur Eliasson and Trine Søndergaard. If you are in possession of photographic works of an international calibre which deserve to be in good company, please send us a valuation enquiry to foto@bruun-rasmussen.dk or via our online valuation service. The consignment deadline for photographic art to the Live Auction is 28 January.
