“Onward Air Transmission”
The “O.A.T.” marking, which is found in various types and sizes, is mainly seen on airmail letters sent during the period from 1943 to 1946, but it was used right up until the late 1960s.
“O.A.T.” stands for Onward Air Transmission, and the marking was used solely on the top letter of the bundles of letters carried on international flights and in transit to other destinations. The marking is usually stamped in black ink, but violet, blue and red markings are not uncommon.
Sunday’s online auction features a rare, censored O.A.T. letter sent from Fuglefjord on the Faroe Islands to Sweden. The letter is just one of many interesting lots in the auction’s fabulous Faroese postal history section. The auction also has a strong section of the first Danish stamps and a section of classic England with several wonderful Penny Black letters, etc.
