Iceland’s 100th Anniversary

This year, Iceland celebrates its 100th year as an independent nation, and we mark the occasion at Sunday's auction with several fine coins from this wonderful country.

Coins Produced in Copenhagen

Iceland was from 1918 to 1944 an independent nation with Danish Christian X as their king - a personal union with Denmark. Until 1940 the Icelandic coins were produced at The Royal Danish Mint in Copenhagen. These fine-looking coins are often seen at our auctions, and there is also a great collection for sale this time around.

World War II and the Founding of the Republic

The connection between Iceland and Denmark was severed during World War II, and subsequently the Icelandic coins were produced in England. These editions were large, and the coins are far from rare today. In 1944, a large majority of Icelanders voted for the abolition of the official ties to Denmark, and Iceland, therefore, became a republic amid World War II.

The Republic's 50th birthday was celebrated in 1994 with commemorative coins. During the past 100 years, Iceland has issued several remarkable and beautiful commemorative coins to celebrate occasions such as the 1000th anniversary in 1930 of the formation of the Althing, the 50th anniversary in 1968 of independence and not least the coins from 1974 celebrating the 1100th anniversary of the first settlements on Iceland.

Congratulations to Iceland with the 100 years!
