Grandfather's Hidden Treasure Found in Thatched Roof

On an old family farm on the island of Als in Southern Jutland, a married couple was quite surprised when three thatchers in the process of replacing the couple's thatched roof found an old tin can.

Inside the tin can were 36 Danish 100 Kroner banknotes from the period 1924-1940. The couple says that it is probably the husband's grandfather that stashed away the money: "He had, after all, experienced the First World War and wanted to secure himself financially. I think the money originates from when the roads to the two towns of Fynshav and Guderup were merged. The new road went straight through my grandfather's fields, which were therefore sold to the Danish state for a substantial amount of money," says the husband. When the grandfather suddenly died at age 60, the money was probably forgotten.

We now have the pleasure of selling 34 of these banknotes, which are quite well-preserved despite the 75 years they have spent in the thatched roof. They will be sold over several coin auctions, and the first ones will already come under the hammer on Sunday 1 April.
