A Trip in the Time Machine!

There will be longcase clocks, table clocks and pocket watches from the 17th-19th century at the upcoming auction in Copenhagen, where we focus on the ticking wonders. A longcase clock by John Ellicott and a Danish private collection of pocket watches are among the highlights.

A theme at this year's first international auction in Copenhagen is clocks in all shapes and sizes. One of the highlights is an English longcase clock with a height of more than 2.5 meters from John Ellicott's workshop. The longcase clock is from approximately 1780 and has an impressive movement consisting of 28 bells. Ellicott was one of the most prominent English clockmakers in the 18th century and served as George III's clockmaker. He also became a fellow of the British Royal Society in 1738 due to his scientific interests, which included building an observatory at his private home. Among Ellicott’s inventions was a compensation pendulum that could provide more accurate timekeeping than other clocks of the period. John Ellicott's son, Edward, joined the workshop in 1760. Over the course of the following years, the father and son signed their clocks together with the signature”Ellicott, London”, a signature that can also be seen on the longcase clock at this auction.

A Plethora of Pocket Watches

The auction also includes a Danish private collection of pocket watches from prominent watchmakers from the 1700s and 1800s. It is rare that we encounter a collection of so many early pocket watches. The collection includes a beautiful Windmills verge pocket watch with repetition on the bell and in gold pair case from approximately 1700-1720. The auction also includes two interesting pocket watches from the Danish Jürgensen-watchmaker dynasty, more specifically an Urban Jürgensen pocket watch made of gold with double duplex wheel and quarter repetition from the 1820s and a Jules Jürgensen hunter-case pocket watch with split-seconds and 1/5 jump seconds from the 1870s.
