The Danish Royal Line in Gold

We invite you to a Live Coin Auction in the centre of Copenhagen, where we can present several historical coins and medals. The lots include medals from the Oldenburg royal line, a naval medal from the Battle of Copenhagen and specially selected coins from Karsten Benedikt Kold's exclusive collection.

The spring's Live Auction kicks off on Tuesday 26 April at 10 am – this time in our historic saleroom in Bredgade 33, Copenhagen. On the day, we will hold two auctions. They are presented in separate catalogues but will take place in continuation of each other. In total, the two auctions consist of 378 lots with rare coins, medals and paper money.

Royal Portrait Series in Gold

If you are interested in the Danish royal line, a spectacular suite of 10 portrait medals covering the Oldenburg royal line is worth keeping an eye on. The portraits go from Christian I to Frederik IV and were created by Frederik IV's moneyer, Christian Wineke in 1729–1730. The medals are minted in the purest gold with a total weight of more than 1.3 kilos.

“Few men in love (or for that matter women and LGBT+ people) have had much success in seducing the object of their desire with a presentation of a collection of old coins. However, the present auction could very well change this past track record, because rarely, if ever before, have I catalogued something as immediately impressive, indeed, almost awe-inspiring, as the complete suite of 10 medals with the Oldenburg royal line!”

Michael Fornitz. Chief Numismatist at Bruun Rasmussen.

Naval Medal from the Battle of Copenhagen

If you are more interested in military history, the legendary naval medal “Modet værger” (Courage Protects) will probably arouse your interest. Frederik VI, who was Crown Prince at the time, presented this medal to Captain Arenfeldt after his efforts at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. It is a particularly rare medal that has long been preserved in the same family. The medal therefore avoided being melted down, which happened to many other medals during this period due to the risk of an impending state bankruptcy. The medal is accompanied by an excellent small work of art in the form of a miniature portrait of Arenfeldt created by one of the country's foremost miniature painters, Cornelius Høyer.

The auction also offers a broad selection of Danish coins, this time ranging from the earliest mintage in Hedeby to a rare 1 kroner from 1960. We also have the pleasure of presenting a suite of coins from the duchies of Schleswig-Holstein that have been part of a fine collection created by three generations of members of the Danish Numismatic Association: Niels, Anders and Ebbe Christensen.

The badge of honour in gold for the Battle of Copenhagen, 1801. Including miniature by Cornelius Høyer. Estimate: DKK 200,000.

Karsten Benedikt Kold's Uncompromising Collection

1 Danish kroner, 1960, aluminium bronze. Estimate: DKK 50,000.

In the second part of the auction, we offer a magnificent collection by Karsten Benedikt Kold. Already at a very young age, Karsten picked up a passion for collecting coins, and early on he developed a special love for the period after the currency reform in 1693 and the coins from the time of Frederik IV. It was also in this area of interest that he took the step from being a serious coin collector to an actual numismatist, which in 2020 culminated in the publication of the monograph on the royal court medallist, Anton Meybusch.

Karsten Benedikt Kold's collection is wide in scope and spans the entire Danish coin history from the Viking Age to the present day. The common denominator is the lack of compromise in the selection of every single piece, where only the best of the best has been good enough. One of the highlights is the Norwegian Speciedaler from 1670 with Christian V, who had just become King and therefore – quite unusually – wears a royal crown.

Speciedaler, 1670, Christiania. Estimate: DKK 600,000.
