Looking for Reading Material for the Summer Holidays?

We launch this summer's book auction with German expressionism, political memorabilia and a copy of Korsbæk Tidende from the Danish TV show “Matador”. A diverse selection of books, letters and photographs are set to continue on their journey to new owners, and the lots will hopefully land right where they have been most wanted.

A Book About Everything Ugly

The almost 100-year-old, scandal-ridden and illustrated book Ecce Homo is today a coveted collector's item. It was created by the German expressionist Georg Grosz (1893-1959), who was also a key figure in the Dadaism movement in Berlin, and together with Otto Dix, he formed the art movement Die Neue Sachlichkeit. The book, published by the left-wing publishing house Der Malik Verlag in 1923, contains a collection of semi-pornographic, critical and satirical depictions of German social classes in the post-World War I period and the Weimar Republic. It revolves around poverty, cruelty, sin and chaos especially derived from the complacency of the bourgeoisie and the lack of morals and conscience. Grosz had to flee to America in 1933 – shortly before Hitler came to power.

George Grosz: Ecce Homo. With 84 offset lithographs and 16 offset lithographs in colour (Ausgabe C). Estimate: DKK 15,000.

From Kennedy to Korsbæk

Memorabilia is the term for an object that has belonged to a famous person or been part of an important event. Memorabilia can be collected within many areas, including sports, music, film, history and politics, such as memorabilia about the former US president John F. Kennedy. This auction features an impressive collection of Kennedy literature, including archived office papers – more specifically pages from a campaign calendar – with original handwritten notes by the 35th President of the United States, JFK himself. The same collector is also selling a number of signed books from people like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Richard Nixon and John McCain as well as royal memorabilia from the British Royal Family. If we look at our own backyard here in Denmark, a number of Matador items are up for auction, including a copy of the fictitious newspaper Korsbæk Tidende. The newspaper was included as a prop in the TV series Matador that had its original run in the late seventies and early eighties but has repeatedly been shown on Danish TV in the years since.

John F. Kennedy: Large collection of Kennedy-related material, incl. schedule with autograph notes by JFK. Estimate: DKK 20,000-25,000.
Matador: "Korsbæk Tidende". Dated 1 March 1945. 58 x 39 cm. Estimate: DKK 2,000-3,000.
