Know your artist: Keld Moseholm

Follow our series of articles entitled “Know your artist”, where we focus on a number of Danish and international artists on the auction market. This time you can learn more about the artist Keld Moseholm and his chubby little figures. Be inspired by the artist’s universe.

He received awards for his art. He exhibited in Sao Paulo and on Bondi Beach, and he has more sculptures in public places in Denmark than any other sculptor. With both a folksy and existentialist approach to his art, he had a large international audience. That said, he has never been exhibited at the country’s largest art museums. Keld Moseholm, who died in 2023, used humour in his strongly personal art, which is so relevant today.

“In Keld Moseholm’s motif universe, both as a naturalist and in his more existentialist works featuring his much-loved, round figures, preliminary sketches of the human body were a fundamental part of his work. And that perhaps accounts for the immediacy and humanity of his deeply original sculptures of small, round figures. Little, round people in absurd situations, battling against a superior force.”

An Impressive Life’s Work.

Keld Moseholm worked with several mediums of expression: life drawing, sketches and naturalistic sculptures – especially female figures, children at play, and portraits. In the early 1980s, he began working with a completely different kind of sculpture: Little, round human figures immersed in movements and processes, in which a story is created. Pooling their efforts, they vainly toil to push stones over a ledge, to pour water out of large vessels, to be rolled over by rolling pins and washed away by streams of bronze, or to assemble entire buildings. Humour and satire are Keld Moseholm’s strongest instruments. Moseholm found a distinctive expressive form in his small, round people, and created a whole unique universe, known and loved by many. He was an exceptionally productive sculptor who created an impressive life’s work.

Keld Moseholm: Obelisk with figures. Signed KM. 5/8. Granite and bronze. H. 85. Sold in December 2023. Hammer price: DKK 115,000.
